London has genuinely cheap live comedy every night of the week. The best-value choices are usually new-material nights, mixed bills and work-in-progress shows, where comedians test jokes before a tour or festival.

You can currently find free shows at Angel Comedy, £5 midweek tickets with a drink at Big Belly, central London comedy from £7 at JK Comedy Club and a monthly £5 mixed bill at Pleasance London. The catch is that “free” can mean a voluntary collection after the show, and the cheapest tickets often sell first.

1. Angel Comedy at the Camden Head

Best for: a genuinely free comedy night
Where: The Camden Head, 2 Camden Walk, N1 8DY
Nearest station: Angel
Usual schedule: free shows seven nights a week
Age: individual free listings are generally 18+

Angel Comedy runs free stand-up at the Camden Head every night. Weekdays include RAW new-material shows, while Friday and Saturday listings use the regular Angel Comedy format.

There is no ticket price for the Camden Head shows, but capacity is limited. The venue advises people to arrive early and says entry stops when the room is full. Treat the advertised start time as the latest point to aim for, not your arrival target.

The line-up can combine experienced comedians trying new material with people at the beginning of their careers. If you want a specific performer or a polished touring show, check the separate paid programme at the nearby Bill Murray.

2. Big Belly midweek comedy

Best for: a ticket and drink from £5
Where: check the individual listing for Southbank, Vauxhall or another current venue
Usual schedule: midweek new-material shows
Important condition: the included drink requires loyalty-card sign-up

Big Belly advertises its Monday-to-Thursday new-material shows from £5, with a drink included when you sign up for its loyalty card. This is one of the strongest fixed-price packages if the venue and date suit you.

The exact venue, ticket price and drink choice can differ by listing. Confirm all three before paying. Weekend shows are a separate format and normally cost more, so use the midweek filter when price matters most.

3. JK Comedy Club from £7

Best for: low-cost professional comedy in central London
Where: venues in Soho, Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus
Usual cheapest shows: Monday in Covent Garden and Tuesday or Wednesday in Soho
Age: 18+, with valid photo ID requested
Booking fee: none when booked directly

JK Comedy Club lists tickets from £7 with no booking fees. Its current ticket guide says Monday Covent Garden shows and Tuesday or Wednesday Soho shows use the £7 price, while other nights and locations can cost more.

Shows normally run for about 75 to 90 minutes with a host and several comedians. Seating is unreserved, so arrive before doors if sitting together matters. Advance booking is sensible because cheaper sessions can sell out.

4. Pleasance London Cut Price Comedy

Best for: a monthly mixed bill with several established circuit acts
Where: Pleasance London, 5 Carpenters Mews, North Road, N7 9EF
Nearest stations: Caledonian Road or Highbury & Islington
Price: £5 plus a £1.50 handling fee per ticket, capped at £6 per order
Age guidance: 16+

Pleasance London’s Cut Price Comedy is a two-hour monthly mixed bill with five acts and an MC. The remaining announced 2026 dates are 22 September, 20 October, 17 November and 15 December.

The £5 ticket is excellent value, but the mandatory handling fee makes the real minimum £6.50 for one person. It is not a weekly club night, so book the correct date rather than making a speculative journey.

5. Top Secret Comedy Club donation shows

Best for: a cheap Covent Garden show with a flexible contribution
Where: 170 Drury Lane or 23 Kingsway
Nearest stations: Covent Garden, Holborn or Temple, depending on the venue
Usual value nights: Sunday to Wednesday, plus Thursday at Kingsway
Age: generally 18+, with younger guests considered only with a parent or guardian

Top Secret’s lower-priced shows use a slightly different model. You pay a small booking charge to reserve entry, then the venue asks for a contribution after the performance to share with the comedians. Most work-in-progress shows are also free or low cost with an optional donation.

Do not treat the booking charge as the whole cost. Decide what you can reasonably contribute and include it in your evening budget. A Priority ticket is available on some listings for people who prefer a fixed upfront price.

Advance booking is important, including for free shows. Seating is unallocated and popular performances sell out.

How to make a comedy night cheaper

  1. Choose new material over Saturday prime time. Monday-to-Thursday test shows are usually cheaper than weekend headline bills.
  2. Compare the real total. Include booking fees, requested donations, drinks and travel.
  3. Book direct. The venue page explains the format and is less likely to hide a compulsory condition.
  4. Arrive early. Free entry is poor value if a full room means you cannot get in.
  5. Eat before the show. A cheap ticket can become an expensive night if you rely on last-minute food in the West End.
  6. Use your travel cap. Contactless or Oyster daily capping can help if comedy is one stop in a longer London day.
  7. Keep a second option nearby. This is especially useful for an unreserved free show.

Use our London travel caps guide to estimate transport, or put the whole evening into the London event budget calculator. For a full day before the show, try the Cheap London Day Planner.

Cheap London comedy questions

Where can I watch free comedy in London?
Angel Comedy runs free shows seven nights a week at the Camden Head in Islington. Top Secret also lists free or low-cost work-in-progress and donation shows, but its booking and contribution model is different.
Is a free comedy show completely free?
At Angel Comedy’s Camden Head shows, entry is advertised as free. Other venues may charge a booking fee or collect voluntary contributions after the performance. Read the individual listing so you understand the format.
What is the cheapest night for comedy in London?
Monday to Wednesday is usually the strongest period for low-cost comedy because venues schedule new-material and work-in-progress shows. Current recurring options include free Angel Comedy shows, Big Belly from £5 and JK Comedy from £7.
Do I need to book cheap comedy in advance?
Book whenever the venue offers reservations. Angel Comedy’s free Camden Head listings advise arriving early, while Top Secret says even its free shows should be booked because performances often sell out.
Are cheap comedy shows suitable for children?
Many are not. Angel’s free listings and JK Comedy use an 18+ policy. Pleasance gives Cut Price Comedy a 16+ guideline. Top Secret may allow a younger person with a parent or guardian at management’s discretion, but advises against attendance for children under 15. Check the exact show before booking.
Will the advertised comedians definitely appear?
Mixed-bill line-ups can change. If you are booking for one particular performer, check with the venue close to the show rather than relying on an early listing.
