    What are you buying?

Farmers', food and street markets: what's the difference?

    • Farmers' markets are for producers selling what they grew, reared or made themselves, usually within a set distance of London. They're mostly weekend mornings and many wind down by 2pm, so go early. Prices are closer to a good greengrocer than a supermarket, but the quality and the seasonal stuff (asparagus in May, cherries in July, game in autumn) are the point.

    • Food markets mix producers, delis and street food. Some are huge and open most of the week, like Borough or Old Spitalfields. Others are a weekend car park full of lunch. Great for eating out cheaply, less so for the weekly shop.

    • Street markets are the council-licensed markets on high streets and market squares: Walthamstow, Ridley Road, East Street, Queen's Market and dozens more. They're where London does its cheap fruit and veg, often sold by the bowl, and many run six days a week.

How to shop London markets on a budget

    1. Use street markets for staples, farmers' markets for treats. Onions, bananas and spinach are usually cheapest from a street market bowl. Save the farmers' market for the cheese, bread or meat you actually want to be good.
    2. Go near closing time. Stalls with perishable stock are more likely to drop prices in the last hour rather than take it home. It's not guaranteed, but it's worth a walk round.
    3. Buy what's in season. It's cheaper and better. Our seasonal food calendar shows what's in season each month.
    4. Bring cash and bags. Many stalls take cards now, but not all, and some farmers' markets ask you to bring your own bags and containers.
    5. Check it's on before you go. Monthly markets, summer-only markets and markets that move during building works are marked on each card. If something's changed, tell us.

    How we check this list

    London markets FAQ

Which London markets are open today?

Use the Today filter at the top of the page. It shows every market trading today, and with your location or postcode it sorts them by distance. Monthly markets only show on the days they actually run.

Which London markets are open on a Sunday?

50 of the markets on this page trade on Sundays, including farmers' markets in Marylebone, Islington, Blackheath and Queen's Park, and street and food markets like Columbia Road, Brick Lane and Chatsworth Road. Pick Sun in the day filter to see them all.

Are there London markets open on a Monday?

Yes, 37 of them, mostly council street markets such as Whitechapel, Church Street, Berwick Street and North End Road. Borough Market is closed on Mondays.

Which markets are open in the evening?

A handful trade into the evening: Brixton Village and Market Row, Broadway Market Tooting, Netil Market, Nag's Head Indoor Market, Rupert Street Market, Canopy Market at King's Cross and the Southbank Centre Food Market. Sydenham has a Friday night market in summer.

    When are farmers' markets open?

Mostly Saturday or Sunday mornings, and most close by about 2pm. A few run midweek: Swiss Cottage on Wednesdays, and Bloomsbury (Wednesday and Thursday) and Westminster Bridge (Thursday) at lunchtime.

Which markets only run once a month?

16 markets on this page run monthly or on selected weekends, including Chiswick Cheese Market (3rd Sunday), Kew Village Market and West Norwood Feast (1st Sunday) and Abbey Mills Market (2nd and last Saturday). Each card shows the next date.

Are street markets cheaper than supermarkets?

For loose fruit and veg, often yes, especially when it's sold by the bowl. It varies by stall and by day, so we don't list prices. Compare by the kilo when you can.

    Do London markets take cards?

More and more stalls do, but not all. At farmers' markets it's often "some stallholders accept cards", so bring a bit of cash to be safe.

Can I suggest a market or report a change?

Yes, please. Use Report a change on any market, or email us. We check every update before it goes live.
