What are London Cool Spaces?

Cool Spaces are free places where Londoners and visitors can take a break from hot weather. The Greater London Authority’s official scheme includes libraries, community centres, cultural venues and other indoor locations that provide seating, drinking water and a cooler environment.

This independent finder uses the official live indoor-site list, then calculates distance locally after you choose to share your location. It does not send your coordinates to London for Cheap, Google or a paid mapping service.

What do Tier 1 and Tier 2 mean?

Tier 1 spaces meet the scheme’s fuller accessibility and availability criteria: they are staffed, wheelchair accessible, normally open between 10am and 5pm on at least five days a week, and have toilets on site or nearby.

Tier 2 spaces still provide free seating, drinking water and a cooler indoor environment, but may open fewer days or not provide the same accessibility and toilet facilities. Always check the displayed opening hours before travelling.

Using a Cool Space safely

Opening hours and facilities can change. Follow staff instructions and check the official listing if a result looks out of date. A Cool Space can help you get out of the heat, but it is not a substitute for medical care. If someone becomes seriously unwell, follow NHS advice and call 999 in an emergency.

Take a refillable bottle too: our London water refill finder lists public fountains and bottle-filling points.

Cool Spaces questions

Does using this finder share my location?
No. Your browser supplies your coordinates to the page and the distance calculation happens on your device. London for Cheap does not receive or store them.
Are all Cool Spaces free?
The imported list is restricted to approved official sites marked as free of charge. The venue may offer paid services as well, but using the Cool Space should be free.
Does air conditioned mean every room is cooled?
Not necessarily. The official data records air conditioning as an available cooling facility. Conditions can vary within a building, so ask staff where to sit.
Where does this information come from?
The locations come from the Greater London Authority Cool Spaces map. The GLA cannot warrant the quality or accuracy of the data. London for Cheap is independent and is not endorsed by or affiliated with the GLA.
