London has some brilliant free museums, but free admission does not always mean you can arrive without a ticket. Some welcome walk-ins, others recommend reserving a free slot, and some direct you to book ahead.

We’ve checked the official visitor information for 22 museums and galleries. Choose yours below to see the normal booking policy, exceptions and official link. This is a booking guide, not a live availability checker.

Bringing luggage? Our London Museum Bag Checker covers the same 22 museums. A free admission ticket does not override a suitcase restriction.

Which London museums can you visit without booking?

Use this comparison for general admission, then read the detailed result above. The labels describe ticket requirements, not a promise of immediate entry. At Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum explicitly says booking is unnecessary, although optional free tickets are available. The neighbouring Queen’s House recommends reserving ahead.

Do you need to book free museums in London?

It depends on the museum and what you want to see. Admission price and entry arrangements are separate questions. A £0 ticket can still be part of a timed booking system; an unticketed collection may sit alongside an exhibition that needs its own reservation.

Read “booking recommended” differently from “book a free ticket”. A recommendation can help you plan and join a priority queue without ruling out walk-ups. Where official information directs you to reserve but does not explain unbooked entry clearly, booking first is the sensible choice.

Check that you are reading the policy for individuals and families. A school class, tour group or organised visit may need a reservation even when one person can walk in. For choosing what to see rather than how to enter, start with our best free museums in London guide.

Which London museums can you just walk into?

The V&A South Kensington, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Wallace Collection and Imperial War Museum London normally need no advance general admission ticket. Young V&A, Museum of the Home, Bank of England Museum and Sir John Soane’s Museum also offer visits without general admission booking.

That gives you flexibility if the weather changes or a child loses interest in your original plan. However, “just turn up” means no advance ticket is needed, not that the museum is always open or has unlimited space. Smaller buildings such as Soane’s may have a queue because only limited numbers fit inside.

Opening days matter too. The Bank of England Museum is normally a weekday visit, while Soane’s is not open every day. Check your intended date before setting off. For a flexible riverside day, our free things to do on the South Bank includes options around Tate Modern.

Which free London museums recommend booking?

The Natural History Museum, British Museum, National Gallery, Queen’s House, Guildhall Art Gallery and Hunterian Museum recommend or encourage free advance reservations while allowing unbooked visitors under their stated arrangements. Booking recommended is not necessarily booking required.

The British Museum says walk-up visits are available daily, with entry depending on capacity. The National Gallery offers free tickets for fast-track entry and also welcomes walk-ups. At the Natural History Museum, a free reservation is the way to guarantee entry, and busy periods can bring queues.

RAF Museum London needs a more cautious reading. Its current visitor pages direct you to book free entry, without clearly confirming walk-in arrangements. Book a free ticket before travelling unless the museum confirms another arrangement.

If a museum is the main reason for your day out, reserve where possible. If it is an optional stop, read the walk-in policy and keep an alternative in mind.

Do you need a free ticket for the Science Museum?

The Science Museum is free to enter, but its official visitor page directs visitors to book free general admission tickets. Book your ticket in advance and check availability before travelling.

Walk-in entry is not clearly guaranteed by that guidance. This does not mean every unbooked visitor will be refused. It means you should not build a fixed family itinerary around the assumption that arriving without a reservation will work.

Also distinguish museum entry from the activity you want inside. A general admission ticket does not automatically include separately ticketed experiences. Check the activity page as well as the main entry calendar, particularly if you have promised children a specific session.

What if free museum tickets are sold out?

First, check the museum’s own walk-in guidance. A full booking calendar is not proof that walk-ins are either allowed or refused. The British Museum explicitly discusses walk-up visits when reservations are unavailable; do not transfer that advice to another museum.

Look at other times or dates and check the official website again for newly released tickets, cancellations or updated availability. There is no universal release schedule across London’s museums. Avoid relying on an old social-media tip about when slots appear.

Choose a nearby alternative

In South Kensington, the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and V&A are close enough to consider together. The V&A’s normal free-gallery policy makes it a useful alternative, but check closures first. A paid exhibition ticket is not necessary just to enjoy its free galleries on an ordinary opening day.

Around Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery accepts walk-ups. In Greenwich, compare the National Maritime Museum’s no-booking guidance with the Queen’s House’s recommendation to reserve. Each has its own opening and visitor arrangements.

Keep the backup realistic for your group. Our free London museum finder helps you choose by area and subject, while the London on a Budget guide puts museum stops alongside transport and food costs.

Are London’s free museums completely free?

Usually the free offer covers general admission or permanent collections. It does not mean every temporary exhibition, children’s attraction, guided tour or special event is included. Read the name of the ticket you are reserving, rather than stopping at the word “free”.

At the Horniman, the main museum and gardens are free, while the Aquarium, Butterfly House and temporary exhibitions have separate paid tickets. The Design Museum’s Designer Maker User collection display needs no ticket, but paid exhibitions have their own booking arrangements. London Museum Docklands’ main galleries are unticketed; Mudlarks has separate tickets and advance booking is recommended.

Wellcome Collection illustrates another distinction: temporary exhibitions may use free timed tickets at very busy periods. These are issued to people already in the building, not reserved ahead by phone. Its permanent galleries generally remain walk-in visits. Events can follow different rules again.

When should you book free museum tickets?

Book once your date is firm if reservations are recommended and the museum matters to your trip. Weekends, school holidays and popular exhibitions can put pressure on entry arrangements. A reservation can remove uncertainty, although it does not remove security checks or every possible queue.

Make the booking for the actual number attending, including children where the ticket system asks for them. Save the confirmation somewhere you can access on arrival, read the time-slot instructions and check whether your exhibition ticket already includes general entry.

Avoid reserving several competing slots you cannot use. If plans change, follow the museum’s cancellation instructions so the place can become available to somebody else. Leave breathing room between museums rather than assuming an exact entry or exit time.

Families can use our free indoor activities for rainy London days for alternatives beyond museums. Browse London Guides for other practical ways to plan the day.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to book the British Museum?
Booking a free ticket is recommended. Walk-ups are accepted subject to capacity, with possible longer waits at busy times.
Can you walk into the Natural History Museum without a ticket?
Unbooked visitors may be admitted, but capacity and queues matter. Reserve a free ticket if you want to guarantee entry.
Is the Science Museum free, and do you need to book?
General admission is free. Its visitor guidance directs you to book a free ticket ahead; walk-in entry should not be assumed.
Do you need tickets for Tate Modern?
No general admission ticket is needed for the free collection. Temporary exhibitions and events have separate arrangements.
Can you visit the V&A without booking?
Normally yes for the free galleries at South Kensington and Young V&A. Check current closure notices and separate exhibition tickets.
What happens if free museum tickets are sold out?
Read that museum’s walk-in rules, try another slot or choose an alternative. A sold-out calendar does not guarantee walk-in access.
Are London's museums free for tourists?
The general admission and free collection policies listed here apply to tourists too. Separate exhibitions and activities can still charge.
Can you visit London museums without booking on weekends?
Yes at venues with normal walk-in entry that are open that day. Capacity, queues and temporary restrictions still apply.
Do children need free museum tickets?
Where admission is ticketed, include children according to the museum’s age and booking instructions. Free admission does not automatically mean no ticket.
Do museum booking rules apply to school groups?
Schools and organised groups often need separate bookings. Use the museum’s school or group visitor information rather than the individual walk-in policy.

Sources and policy checks

Official visitor and admission-policy links are provided for every museum in the checker and comparison table. Policies were reviewed on 25 October 2026. These are editorial checks, not live capacity or ticket availability. The detailed policy and current closure notices take precedence over a short category label.
