London’s immersive experiences increasingly let you do more than look at projections on a wall. Put on a wireless headset and you can walk around the International Space Station, descend to the wreck of the Titanic or travel towards the edge of a black hole.
We have selected three of the most interesting options currently available. Two are free-roaming VR experiences at Eclipso in Camden; the third is a science-led journey through space at the Science Museum.

Step aboard the International Space Station
Space Explorers: The ISS Experience places you inside a walkable, three-dimensional recreation of the International Space Station.
Wearing a wireless VR headset, you can move around the station, look down at Earth and discover scenes showing how astronauts live and work in orbit. Floating points around the environment unlock footage and stories, allowing visitors to explore parts of the experience at their own pace.
The production is built around stereoscopic 360-degree footage captured aboard the real ISS. That makes it feel closer to an immersive documentary than a conventional space-themed game. Its strongest draw is the chance to see the station at full scale and watch genuine astronaut footage within the environment.

Titanic: Echoes from the Past
Dive to the wreck before travelling back to 1912
Titanic: Echoes from the Past begins beneath the North Atlantic, taking visitors approximately 3,800 metres down to the ship’s resting place.
The experience then turns back the clock to 1912. You can walk through recreated areas of the Titanic, including first- and third-class cabins, the engine room, Grand Staircase and boat deck.
Rather than presenting the Titanic as a static collection of objects, the production uses characters and reconstructed environments to explore the people aboard the ship and its final voyage. Its structure is more narrative-led than Space Explorers, with a clearer historical story carrying visitors from the wreck to life aboard the liner.
The subject is inevitably sombre. Although the experience is designed for a broad audience, parents should consider whether younger children will be comfortable with a story involving a real disaster and loss of life.

Smithsonian Starstruck: An Immersive Experience
Travel from Earth to the edge of a black hole
Smithsonian Starstruck turns astronomical research into a shared, walkable journey across the universe.
The experience begins at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory before launching visitors into space aboard some of the world’s most powerful telescopes. Its environments and story draw on information from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, NASA, the European Space Agency, Hubble, the James Webb Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory.
During the journey, visitors can:
- Witness solar flares many times larger than Earth
- Hear vibrations recorded from the Sun
- Explore an extreme volcanic exoplanet
- Watch a red supergiant erupt as a supernova
- Visit the Pillars of Creation
- Approach a supermassive black hole

Groups of up to six people explore together as digital avatars, guided by a virtual host called Astro. The result sits somewhere between an interactive science documentary and a journey through a planetarium that you can physically walk around.

Your Starstruck ticket does not replace the museum’s admission booking. You should also reserve a separate free Science Museum admission ticket for the same day. Museum entry without a reservation may not be guaranteed when capacity is limited.
Free lockers are provided because bags cannot be carried into the VR arena. Hats and caps should also be removed before the experience.

Which immersive experience should you choose?
Choose Space Explorers for realism
Space Explorers is the strongest choice if your main interest is genuine astronaut life and the International Space Station.
The real footage gives it a documentary quality, while the free-roaming format lets you decide which areas and astronaut stories to investigate. It should appeal to adults as much as children.
Choose Titanic for storytelling
Titanic is the most emotionally driven of the three.
It combines the spectacle of reaching the wreck with recreated ship interiors and personal stories. Pick it if you want a historical narrative rather than a broad scientific journey.
Choose Starstruck for a family science day
Starstruck is the easiest experience to build into a larger day out.
General admission to the Science Museum is free, so you can explore the museum before or after the paid VR session. The higher minimum age of 10 should be considered when planning a family visit.
What is a free-roaming VR experience like?
Unlike seated VR, these experiences allow you to walk around a physical room while the headset displays a much larger digital environment.
Other visitors appear as avatars, and visual boundaries help stop people from walking outside the safe area. You will not actually climb, float or travel through space, even when the images create that sensation.
The format can feel surprisingly convincing, especially when looking down from a height or approaching a large object.
If you have not tried free-roaming VR before:
- Wear comfortable, secure shoes
- Arrive early enough for the safety briefing
- Tell staff if the headset feels loose or the image is blurred
- Move steadily rather than rushing
- Stop and alert a team member if you feel dizzy or unwell

The verdict
These experiences use similar free-roaming technology but offer three distinct types of day out.
Space Explorers is the closest to stepping inside a real astronaut documentary. Titanic provides the strongest historical narrative. Starstruck offers the broadest scientific journey and pairs naturally with a free visit to the Science Museum.
Whichever one you choose, the appeal is the sense of scale: these are places and events that cannot be recreated convincingly through an ordinary screen.
