If you want to walk into the Great Hall before the day’s coach parties arrive, the 9am slot is the one to book, and where you sleep the night before decides whether that actually happens. Get it right and you’re on the first shuttle bus with almost nobody else in the room. Get it wrong and you’re stuck on a train from central London at 7am, hoping it’s not delayed. This guide covers where to stay, matched to how you’re getting there and what kind of trip you want.

Why the 9am slot is worth building a hotel stay around

The Studio Tour’s first tour of the day is genuinely quieter than every other slot. Fewer people means shorter waits to get your photo at the Hogwarts Express platform, more room in front of the Great Hall doors, and a calmer walk through Diagon Alley before it fills up. The catch is getting there. Most visitors come from central London on the morning coach or train, and by the time they’ve reached Euston, changed onto a train to Watford Junction, and queued for the shuttle, the 9am slot is already gone for them. Staying close cuts that whole chain out.

Getting there: the bit that decides where you should sleep

The Studio Tour’s shuttle bus from Watford Junction is free with your ticket and takes about 15 minutes. Normally it runs from 9.20am, but on days when the first tour starts at 9am, extra buses run from 8.15am, specifically so early-slot visitors aren’t stranded. If you’re staying anywhere near Watford Junction station, that 8.15am bus is your target.

If you’re driving, parking at the Studio Tour is free, right outside the entrance, so there’s no cost penalty for choosing a hotel a bit further out. The only thing that changes with distance is how early your alarm needs to go off.

Closest, and the only one you can actually walk to: Mercure London North Watford, Hunton Park Hotel

If you don’t want to think about buses or traffic at all, this is the answer. It’s roughly 15-20 minutes on foot from the Studio Tour gate, close enough that you could, in theory, skip transport entirely and just walk in for the 9am opening. It’s set in its own grounds with an indoor pool, which makes it feel like more of a countryside stay than a roadside hotel, and breakfast is available from around £10-16pp if you want it there rather than grabbing something before you leave.

Best if you don’t have a car: Holiday Inn Express London - Watford Junction

This one sits right next to Watford Junction station, close enough that the Studio Tour’s own shuttle bus picks up just outside. If you’re travelling without a car, this is the pick: you walk out of the hotel, straight onto the 8.15am shuttle, and you’re at the gate in 15 minutes. It also puts you a short walk from central Watford’s shops and restaurants for the evening before, and a 20-minute direct train from London Euston if you’re coming from the city that morning instead of staying over.

Best straightforward drive: Premier Inn Watford North

If you’ve got a car and just want somewhere reliable and budget-friendly, this is a 9-minute drive from the Studio Tour with free onsite parking. It’s a standard Premier Inn: predictable, no surprises, and priced at the budget end compared with the options nearer the gate. Good if you’d rather spend the money on tour add-ons than the hotel itself.

Best if you’re also spending time in St Albans: Holiday Inn Express St Albans - M25, Jct.22

This one is a bit further out. IHG’s own page puts it at 9 miles from the Studio Tour, and realistically that’s closer to a 20-minute drive once you account for traffic on the way in, rather than the 15 minutes some booking sites round it down to. What you get in exchange is a proper base next to St Albans, a genuinely worthwhile stop in its own right if you’re combining the day with more than just the tour, plus the practical convenience of a retail park right next door: a couple of fast-food places, a Marks & Spencer, and a petrol station, useful if you’re arriving late or leaving early and don’t want to hunt for food.

Best if you want to make a weekend of it: The Grove

Less than a mile from the Studio Tour and a genuine five-star estate: 300 acres, a golf course, a spa, three pools, several restaurants. Warner Bros. itself lists The Grove among its recommended nearby hotels. It’s the most expensive option here by a distance, and it isn’t really built around an early alarm and a quick shuttle ride, it’s built around staying somewhere nice regardless of the tour. If budget isn’t the deciding factor and you’d rather turn this into a proper break, this is it.

What people don’t tell you

A few things that don’t show up on the official site or the booking pages, but come up again and again from people who’ve actually done the early-slot run:

  • Running late isn’t necessarily the disaster it feels like. Reviewers report the Studio Tour tolerating anywhere from 30 minutes to a little over an hour late in practice. That’s not a promise, and it’s not officially confirmed, so don’t plan around it, but if traffic on the A414 makes your St Albans drive longer than expected, it’s not automatically a wasted trip.
  • Arriving early isn’t wasted time, even if you’re not let in sooner. One detailed account describes using the free cloakroom to drop bags, browsing the Grand Hall, café and shop before the doors open, and the tour occasionally starting a little early anyway if the queue is quiet. If you’re walking from Hunton Park, you’ll likely arrive well ahead of 9am regardless, and that time isn’t lost.
  • Hotel breakfast can clash with an 8.15am shuttle. Most hotel breakfasts open from around 7am, which is fine if you’re staying at Hunton Park or Holiday Inn Express Watford Junction, but tighter if you’re driving in from St Albans and still want a proper sit-down breakfast first. Worth deciding in advance whether you’re eating at the hotel or grabbing something once you’re inside the Studio Tour’s own café.
  • If you booked a coach transfer package rather than the train, you don’t have to take the return leg. Those packages bundle a fixed return coach, which caps how long you can stay. If you’re staying overnight nearby anyway, you can skip that return leg and make your own way back via the free shuttle and train instead, meaning you’re not rushed out the door to catch a coach that doesn’t care whether you’ve finished the gift shop.
  • If you’re flying in and hiring a car, check overnight parking is actually free at your specific hotel, not just parking in general. Most of the budget chains here include it, but it’s a quick thing to confirm rather than assume, especially for one-off apartment-style stays.

Common questions

Do I actually need to stay overnight to make the 9am slot?
Not necessarily, if you already live within striking distance of Watford Junction or can drive straight to the free onsite car park. But if you’re coming from central London or further, an overnight stay near Watford is what actually gets you onto the early shuttle rather than the one that arrives after the tour has already started.
Is the shuttle bus really free from Watford Junction?
Yes. It’s included with your Studio Tour ticket, you just show your booking confirmation to the driver. You don’t need to buy a separate ticket for it.
Do any of these hotels run their own shuttle to the Studio Tour?
No. The free shuttle only runs from Watford Junction station itself, not from any of the hotels directly (Holiday Inn Express Watford Junction is next to the station, not the same as being on the shuttle route). If you’re not staying at Hunton Park, which is walkable, or near the station, you’ll need to drive or taxi in.
Is parking free if I drive to the Studio Tour?
Yes, standard parking in the car park outside the entrance is free with your booking confirmation. There’s also a paid Priority Parking option, £10, closer to the entrance, but it has to be booked online in advance and isn’t available on the day.
Which of these is cheapest?
Premier Inn Watford North and Holiday Inn Express St Albans both sit at the budget end of the chains covered here. Exact rates move by date, so it’s worth comparing live prices for your actual visit rather than relying on a fixed figure.
How far ahead do I need to book the 9am slot itself?
Reviewers report booking morning slots four to six months ahead, especially around Christmas and school holidays, so it’s worth locking in the tour time before you book a hotel around it. If your date shows as sold out, check back, cancelled slots do get released.
What happens if I'm running late for my slot?
Not officially confirmed by Warner Bros., but reviewers report a reasonable delay being accepted in practice, from 30 minutes up to a little over an hour. Don’t plan around it, but it’s not automatically the end of your visit if traffic makes you a bit late.
