London has several genuine 2-for-1 schemes, but the words “2-for-1” do not tell you what evidence you need, where you must book or whether the deal beats the normal online price.
The two most useful routes for visitors are the current TfL promotions and National Rail’s Days Out Guide. They have different travel rules and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How the current TfL 2-for-1 offers work
TfL publishes a relatively small selection of named promotions. Its current instructions say that one person from each party must show proof of travel in the TfL Go app or a TfL Oyster photocard at the ticket office.
This is different from simply tapping a bank card and expecting a discount at every attraction. You must choose an offer TfL currently lists and follow that offer’s booking and evidence instructions.
The selection can change. It currently includes London attractions and activities such as Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, HMS Belfast, Historic Royal Palaces and Urban Golf, each with its own end date and exclusions.

How National Rail 2FOR1 works
National Rail’s Days Out Guide is broader and can include attractions, tours, activities and dining. The trade-off is stricter journey evidence.
A useful working checklist is:
- Find the venue on the live Days Out Guide rather than relying on an old blog post.
- Open the individual offer and read which rail tickets qualify.
- Check whether you need to generate or print a voucher.
- Keep the qualifying National Rail ticket for each person who needs one.
- Make sure the ticket covers the visit date and relevant journey.
An Oyster journey, a contactless journey or a ticket valid only on London Underground is not automatically a qualifying National Rail ticket. Some London terminals and travelcards create questions that depend on the precise ticket, so check the scheme’s current travel-ticket rules before buying admission.

TfL or National Rail: which should you use?
Use TfL’s route when the attraction is on its current list and you can easily provide the evidence TfL requests. It can be convenient for visitors already travelling around London.
Use National Rail’s route when you already need a qualifying train ticket and its live directory has the attraction you want. Do not buy an unnecessary train ticket until you have compared the complete cost.
If both schemes cover the same attraction, compare:
- the admission price used by each offer;
- whether advance booking is possible;
- ticket and journey costs;
- blackout dates;
- child, family, student or concession prices;
- cancellation flexibility.
When 2-for-1 is not the cheapest option
“One ticket free” sounds decisive, but it is often based on the full walk-up adult price.
Two discounted advance tickets can cost less. A family ticket may beat two separate 2-for-1 pairs. Children, students, disabled visitors and carers may already qualify for better admission arrangements. Some attractions are also included in sightseeing passes, although a pass only saves money if you use enough of it.
Calculate the final amount for your actual group rather than comparing the largest advertised percentage.

Cinema, restaurants and other schemes
The same principle applies beyond attractions.
Meerkat Movies no longer requires you to purchase insurance or another qualifying product. Download the free Compare the Market app, register for app-only rewards and generate the cinema code there. The current offer provides two standard tickets, with the cheaper ticket free, at participating cinemas on Tuesdays or Wednesdays until 19 July 2027. Booking fees, upgrades and premium formats may remain payable.
The app also has pizza rewards throughout the week. Domino’s is a genuine 2-for-1 offer, so it appears in our live directory. Pizza Hut Delivery and Papa Johns currently use a separate 50%-off mechanic, so we show those as related savings rather than incorrectly calling them 2-for-1. These pizza rewards are app-only; minimum spend, delivery fees, delivery radius, card-payment and geographical restrictions can vary by outlet.
Tastecard lists 2-for-1 food at participating restaurants, but it is a paid membership product. Check the precise benefit at your chosen branch, whether advance booking is required and what a trial will renew at.
Other promotions are regularly described alongside 2-for-1 offers even when they work differently. O2 Priority’s two-ticket cinema price, Tesco’s doubled Clubcard voucher value and Visitor Oyster percentage discounts can be useful, but none should automatically be described as a free second ticket.
A safe booking checklist
- Start on the scheme or venue’s official page.
- Check the offer is live on the date you will visit.
- Confirm exactly which travel ticket, membership or account is required.
- Compare the total with advance, family and concession prices.
- Read exclusions for weekends, school holidays and special events.
- Save the voucher, booking confirmation and travel evidence offline.
- Never buy a rail ticket or membership solely for an offer until the saving exceeds its cost.
The bottom line
TfL’s promotions are usually the simplest place to start for a small selection of London venues. National Rail’s Days Out Guide provides more choice when your journey qualifies. Cinema and restaurant memberships can help residents who will use the benefit repeatedly.
The best scheme is not the one advertising the biggest headline. It is the one your group genuinely qualifies for and that produces the lowest final price.
