This UK recipe-box comparison covers prices, introductory deals and the subscription details that determine whether a meal kit or prepared-meal service actually saves you money. For current offers, start with HelloFresh’s £50 new-user discount, Gousto’s first-box discount, Riverford’s £15 referral credit and Simmer Eats’ 50% first-box referral offer.
The cheapest option is usually the service with a strong introductory offer and a box size you will finish—not necessarily the one advertising the biggest percentage.
But a discounted food box is not automatically cheaper than supermarket shopping. This guide shows how to compare the true price per portion, use welcome offers without wasting food and avoid paying for a delivery you did not intend to receive.
UK meal delivery boxes compared
Offers and prices change frequently. These details were checked on 16 September 2026; follow the linked guide or provider and confirm the live basket before paying.
| Food box | Current saving or starting point | Best suited to | Important catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| HelloFresh | £50 new-user referral offer | Broad choice, families and beginners | The saving may be divided across boxes; weekly subscription |
| Gousto | 65% off the first box with our code | Large weekly menu and flexible household sizes | Later boxes cost more; premium recipes can add charges |
| Riverford | £15 credit after the first delivery | Organic produce, veg boxes and recipe boxes | Credit reduces a later order, not the first checkout |
| Simmer Eats | 50% off box one, then 40% off box two and 20% off the next eight | Prepared meals for weeks when you do not want to cook | It is a reheating service, not a recipe box; subscription terms apply |
| Mindful Chef | 30% off the first four orders; normal prices from £4.50 per serving | Health-led meals and dietary filters | Usually dearer than mainstream meal kits at full price |
| Green Chef | 40% off the first box | Keto, lower-carb, vegan and other diet preferences | Two-person minimum; give five days’ notice to skip or cancel |
| Grubby | Standard prices from £4.50 to £7.25 per portion | Fully plant-based recipe boxes | Cheapest rate requires the largest family box |
| SimplyCook | Four one-off recipe kits for £15 plus £1.99 delivery | Cheap flavour kits using your own groceries | It does not supply the main fresh ingredients |
The first four rows link to our detailed, independently written offer guides. We do not currently have referral relationships with Mindful Chef, Green Chef, Grubby or SimplyCook; they are included because they are useful alternatives.
What is the cheapest meal delivery box in the UK?
For an eligible new customer, HelloFresh or Gousto will often produce the cheapest introductory cooked-from-scratch portions because their welcome discounts are large. Simmer Eats can be a strong option when the practical alternative is a takeaway or convenience meal, rather than supermarket cooking. Which wins depends on the available meals, box size, delivery charge and how the promotion is spread.
At regular prices, the cheapest advertised rate normally requires more meals or more people. Grubby, for example, lists £4.50 per portion for its largest family plan but £7.25 per portion for its smallest two-recipe box. A lower unit price is not a saving if several portions go uneaten.
Riverford is a different comparison. Its recipe boxes can be bought alongside organic fruit, vegetables and groceries, while the referral provides £15 credit only after the first successful delivery. Read our Riverford referral guide before counting that credit against your budget.
SimplyCook can look much cheaper because it posts small flavour kits rather than meat, fish, vegetables, rice or pasta. Add the supermarket ingredients before comparing it with a complete Gousto or HelloFresh meal.
How to calculate the real cost per portion
Use this calculation for each box:
(box price + delivery + recipe supplements − discount) ÷ portions you will actually eat
If a £30 box contains six advertised portions but one meal will be wasted, divide by five rather than six. Add any premium-meal, protein-swap or weekend-delivery fee shown in the basket.
Then make two comparisons:
- Against your normal supermarket meal: include only ingredients you would need to buy, not the full shelf price of oil, salt or spices already at home.
- Against the realistic alternative: if the box prevents a £25 takeaway, it may save money even when Aldi or Lidl would have been cheaper.
How to save the most money with food boxes
A low-risk meal-box saving strategy
- Start with the meals, not the percentage.
Preview the menu and confirm there are enough recipes your household will eat before creating an account.
- Choose the smallest useful box.
Avoid increasing the order merely to display a lower price per serving.
- Open the strongest eligible offer.
Use our current HelloFresh, Gousto, Riverford or Simmer Eats guide, or compare the provider’s public promotion.
- Remove paid upgrades.
Premium recipes, extra protein, desserts and add-ons can quietly absorb the introductory saving.
- Record every discounted and normal total.
A multi-box offer may shrink each week. Screenshot or note the schedule before payment.
- Set two reminders.
Use one reminder to select meals and another at least a day before the stated edit or cancellation cutoff.
- Freeze suitable leftovers.
Do this promptly and follow the storage guidance for the ingredients and cooked dish.
- Recalculate after the promotion.
Continue only if the normal price still beats the meals the service genuinely replaces.
Do not create duplicate accounts or misstate your address to repeatedly claim new-customer promotions. Providers can reject orders or withdraw discounts where their eligibility rules are not met.
Are meal-kit introductory offers worth it?
They can be excellent short-term value. A heavily reduced first box is also designed to start a recurring subscription, so judge the offer and the subscription separately.
The safest approach is to assume you will pay the normal price for the next scheduled delivery. If that would damage your budget, skip or cancel as soon as the first order is secure and before the provider’s cutoff. Do not rely on remembering later.
Pros
- Large new-customer discounts can make initial portions very cheap.
- Pre-portioned ingredients reduce forgotten leftovers.
- Less planning and fewer emergency food purchases.
- Recipe cards can build cooking confidence.
Cons
- Normal prices often exceed a budget supermarket shop.
- Weekly subscriptions continue unless managed.
- Delivery and premium recipes can cost extra.
- Packaging and unsuitable meals can create waste.
Best cheap food box for one person
Most full meal boxes start at two portions. Treat the second serving as tomorrow’s lunch, but only choose recipes that store and reheat safely. Mindful Chef offers a one-person choice on parts of its range; Green Chef says its smallest box serves two.
SimplyCook can be easier for one person because the flavour kits keep while you control the amount of fresh food purchased. It is not a complete ingredient box, so include groceries in the cost.
Best-value recipe box for couples
Two-person plans offer the widest choice across Gousto, HelloFresh, Mindful Chef, Green Chef and Grubby. Use the introductory total to test portion sizes and recipe quality, then compare the normal two-person price before a second full-price box is charged.
Cheapest meal box for families
Larger plans tend to have the lowest advertised price per portion. Check whether “family” means four adult portions or two adults plus children, and avoid recipes that require separate meals for fussy eaters.
Mindful Chef currently advertises normal family meals from £4.50 per portion, while Grubby’s largest family plan reaches £4.50 per portion. These are starting points, not guarantees that every recipe or box costs the same.
Best recipe boxes for vegan, vegetarian or specialist diets
Grubby is fully plant-based. Green Chef focuses heavily on diet preferences including vegan, vegetarian, keto and lower-carb choices. Mindful Chef provides dietary filters and wholefood-led recipes. Gousto and HelloFresh usually provide vegetarian and plant-based choices within broader menus.
Always read the current allergen information. Pre-portioned does not mean suitable for a severe allergy, and substitutions or cross-contamination policies differ by provider.
How to avoid an unwanted meal-box delivery
Most services are flexible subscriptions, but “cancel anytime” still means before the order cutoff. A box already processed may remain chargeable.
- Check the next delivery date immediately after joining.
- Select meals rather than allowing automatic choices.
- Find the provider’s skip, pause and cancellation controls while logged in.
- Make changes earlier than the deadline; Green Chef asks for five days’ notice.
- Save the confirmation email or account screenshot.
- Check your bank after the final expected payment.
If you want groceries or a last-minute alternative rather than a recurring recipe box, compare our cheap-eating apps, markets and discounts and browse the latest food discounts.
